arabian freak

Image
Arab music tradition is the urban-based music of the eastern Mediterranean region ranging from Cairo to Beirut, Damascus and Aleppo. This music consists predominantly of precomposed songs that is, pieces in which a composer has determined the form and content of the music to be performed. With such a repertoire, the musician's role is that of interpreter, charged with artistically rendering someone else's creation. The Arab instrumentalist is, however, accorded the opportunity to improvise his own creations in a genre called taqasim (singular and plural in this usage). Individual taqasim are not simply free-formed products of the instrumentalist's fancy; instead, the instrumentalist improvises according to a complex set of preestablished rules and conventions. Because taqasim gives the instrumentalist the opportunity to present his own creation rather than rely on another's composition, it is a highly valued musical genre. > > Enta Omri TREMENDOUS

-He cried in a whisper at some image, at some vision—he cried out twice, a cry that was no more than a breath—"The horror! The horror!"- ...and suddenly primary colours by the horrors makes an over-used and boring neo-genre sound exciting again.Well done boys! This is the >>New Ice Age!

Yeah...I'm back. I had too much work these days plus I was moving houses at the time and I guess that explains partly the more than 3-weeks blog silence (I'm living the ikea nightmare people!!). The real reason though that I wasn't too much in the mood to post something here was that I haven't been able to get in touch with any interesting music lately and that made the idea of a post or a mix somehow difficult. The last couple of days good tunes are coming again my way and of course I'll share a piece. >>stick to the formula ps. the hidden story of my absence is that almost simultaneously I got a serious fixation with both the true blood and supernatural series. That was enough to make me a tv junkie and too bored to do anything else...

I don't really get the "hate" reactions for the new Animal Collective album. I find it weirdest still that the majority of the criticism comes from techno music enthusiasts and they all write serious "lord of the rings" arguments like they are struggling to pass a university essay. Ok maybe merriweather post pavilion is a bit overrated, etc., etc. so what? Where were all this criticism and "bright" perception on music when miserable forgotten "great" albums and music genres ruled the heads and lists of savage elitist connoisseurs and supposedly valid music sites? To make my point short and simple, merriweather post pavilion is at least a truly enjoyable album in comparison to many boring shit that we had to endure listening as "great" all these years! And what about the argument "there is music and there is the "ON/OFF" button", eh? >>Idiots pasture

When an album has a song which starts with the following lines... "This is going to be a year of great changes for you, Although they may not seem important to anyone else, To you they would be of supreme importance" ...then you don't have to do anything better than to believe it and it somehow becomes important! H ere's another jolly song straight from an ancient star }} A Great Day Out {{

ο τεκές

The first time I've heard this song was in a tape compiled by a friend of my dad's, full of original forgotten and forbidden rembetika. They were called forbidden in my native language because most of them were telling tales of the underground, full of murder, violence, drugs, disease, obsession, prostitution, prison and poverty in using quite a bold and raw vocabulary. Something like the blues in a way. I was of course immediately smitten. Otan boukarw ston teke was written by Anestis Delias. He wrote few songs but utterly unique for the genre. He died from a heroine overdose in 1944. The second song is a cover probably the best ever made in a rembetiko in my opinion. It was released in 1982 by mousikes taxiarhies, a greek rock band and it can be found in their first album. Tekes is a greek slang word for a hashish den. >> anestis delias - otan boukarw ston teke >> mousikes taxiarhies - o tekes
