bigger than religion

My original idea for my new mix was to do one of my usual takes on experimental, drone music but quite naturally I caught myself listening to Erykah Badu's The Healer from her recent album New Amerykah Part One (4th World War) so my mix turned out like this:
erykah badu - the healer
blanketship & qulfus - blanketown
j dilla - workinonit
k.a.l - black-hearted bastards
alias - new to a few
dalek - tarnished
paul white - a silent cry

N-E-O -N

To continue my argument about the best greek band of all time...well... at this point of time, Neon, an experimental-classical duo from Athens are probably one of the most serious contestants for the title. They have released three albums till now. A full-length debut called au theatre de sons imaginaires by poeta negra and the other two are self-released soundtracks for theatre plays. I firmly believe that they are one step ahead than anything that is released today in the greek music scene. They are currently unasigned and their new un-released album is a quite interesting case of modern interpretations of classical pieces. They first caught my attention with this track:

They even caught my mom's attention with this song and her favorite artist is phill collins! Great stuff!

Villa 21

I guess the best greek band of all time in my humble opinion was and still is Villa 21*. They used english lyrics in their songs and they were formed in the early 80s. It was a new wave/ post punk band and quite underground because of that. They released 3 lps. The first two in the legendary greek label Creep Records. They lasted less than 10 years and then the singer died tragically in a car accident. I was too young in those years to catch them live but I always thought they were great and I had one superb song in my argument to make my point. In time I discovered one more and I felt more than content. My latest mixes are more new wave/synth pop oriented as a nostalgia about this kind of music has overtaken me lately but I promise that the next one will be slightly different.

adn crystal - tam tam samba
negativland - escape from noise
kap bambino - more machine
metal urbain - panik
villa 21 - i see no!
un froid seul - opera multi steel
suicide - radiation
crystal castles - air war
c.o.m.a. - verre
john bender - 39a5 something
carlos giffoni - eternal noise
edgar froese - stuntman
devo - gates of steel

* As for Aphrodite's Child and Last Drive (some might argue) I didn't catch them play live either and..well..., to put it as mildly as possible this is not a post about them although I love Vangelis solo stuff!

another one

My holidays have begun (sort of) so I've got plenty of free time and nothing to do with it. Since my planned trip is still 10 days away and all my friends have gone in their holidays I have to find a way to fill all these hours. So here's another mix. This one is noisy at first and it doesn't go well with the hot weather not until the last 4 or 5 songs! Also I'm putting the playlists back on.
no age - every artist needs a tragedy
heavy winged - gruesome pillow talk
sudden infant - somniphobia
religious knives - the sun
prurient - strict ideas

Here's a mix I did yesterday. I was really bored while doing it so I don't think it turned out any good.
neon neon - raquel
matthew dear - deserter
dino felipe - working or not
john maus - maniac
ariel pink's haunted graffiti - oblivious peninsula
chromatics - running up that hill
billy idol - eyes without a face
echo and the bunnymen - over the wall

pete wylie (the mighty whah!) - remember
ariel pink's haunted graffiti - MTV'n' D&D
young marble giants - searching for mr. right
afterthought: I always find excuses to play john maus and ariel pink(twice!). Also in the photo the face of a friend appears out of the blue. It wasn't intended. If you ever see this...sorry dude! I just noticed (two days ago actually!)

declaration of the andromeda mix

When I do a mix I guess my subconscious hits the brainwashed part of my brain and kaboom! Ok I was never a fan of freudian psychology if the previous sentence doesn't make any sense. Basically what I do is putting songs one after the other with no logic or in an unorthodox context. I'm not a professional dj or anything of a sort. I like music a lot and I just do it as a hobby. I also decided not to put playlists any more (well, except if I'm asked). I'd more prefer to say a few words about certain songs lately. So hope you enjoy this one, there's some of the best music I've heard recently inside

Sunday, July 20, 2008

If you are able to stand the whole 10 minutes of Panda Bear's Carrots (a live version from somewhere this time) then you won't experience any problem with this mix. You might actually enjoy it. I wonder what I was thinking when I turned to that song again. This mix was made because of Mark Stewart's Strange Cargo. I almost started dancing in the middle of the street when I first heard it, It' s more than great if a tune can make you feel like that these days. There's also the new Tricky single which finds him at his best in a long while.
